Plattsburgh stuns Oswego with a late game Free Throw

OSWEGO– A stunned crowd watched as Hannah Whitney hit the game sealing free throw to help Plattsburgh State defeat Oswego State 56-55 Friday evening.

The free throw was the first lead for the Lady Cardinals since there was 9:15 left in the first quarter. The Lady Lakers had lead by as much as 13 in the game.

A strong fourth quarter surge powered the Lady Cardinals to a victory. Whitney scored 10 points in the quarter, including three 3-pointers.

Plattsburgh, credit to them they were not used to losing, and they were coming out really aggressive, and we just kind of needed to take care of the ball better,” Oswego State assistant coach Audra Clark said.

The Lady Lakers turned the ball over 8 times in the second half as well as committing 7 fouls. In the half the Lady Cardinals outscored Oswego State, 38-27.

Before the start of the game, seniors Sydni Eure, Erin Gantley, Morgan Wolanin, Tatyana Fish and Quincey Zimmerman were honored for their dedication and time to the Oswego State program.

The pregame ceremony seemed to provide life to the Lady Lakers, as the team went on a 15-3 run to start the game. Eure scored 6 points during the run. Eure finished the night with a team high 20 points.

Gantley had 10 points, 7 rebounds and provided 4 assists for the Lady Lakers which helped Oswego in starting out hot.

The Lady Lakers’ defensive effort was a huge factor throughout the game. Morgan Wolanin swatted away 8 shots and had 12 rebounds. Wolanin’s 8 blocks pushed her 51 total on the season which currently leads the SUNYAC.

“We played very good defense, and we just could not take care of the ball in the fourth quarter, which did not help us, but we’ll get one tommorow,” Clark said.

Even with the Lady Lakers’ superb defense they could not stop Plattsburgh State. Taylor Clare dropped 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the win over Oswego State. Clare also had 2 blocks in the second half in slowing down the Lady Lakers.

“We are all just hungry for a win, doing everything we can, going above and beyond, hopefully next week we can come out and just play all the way until the end and get the ‘W’, Eure said.

The loss for the Lady Lakers was their 10th straight loss dropping them to 6-14 on the season, while the Lady Cardinals move up to 7-13 on the season.

Oswego State’s next game is a home match-up against Potsdam Saturday at 2 p.m., while Plattsburgh State is in SUNY Cortland Saturday at 2 p.m.
