Who will win Game of Thrones March Madness?

As of the time of writing this, there are 12 teams left in the NCAA Tournament. Four more teams will have their season come to an end with tonight’s slate of games. A week after the NCAA Tournament ends, the real madness begins. Game of Thrones’ final season starts April 14th and with only six episodes left, everyone is wondering who will sit on the iron throne in the end.

I’ve made a Game of Thrones bracket with the same amount of players as teams left in the NCAA Tournament in order to find out who will sit on the iron throne and what NCAA team each character represents. I give you: Game of Thrones March Madness (Game of Madness? March of Thrones-ness?).

Here’s the bracket, since this bracket didn’t start from a field of 64, the top four seeds get first round byes. The seeding was made in order of who has the best odds to be the “Ruler of Westeros at the end of Season 8” according to betonline.ag (Yes, you can bet on Game of Thrones. Yes, I’ll probably end up betting on Game of Thrones). Winners will be determined completely subjectively by me based on who I think has a better case to sit on the iron throne at the end of the series.

Gendry (LSU) vs. Tyrion Lannister (Michigan State)

Gendry has one of the better claims to throne being the bastard son of King Robert Baratheon. But he also is far from a major player and no one seriously thinks he’ll win. That’s why he’s LSU.

Tyrion is a fan favorite. He’s well versed in playing the game, he’s been here before. He’s Tom Izzo’s Michigan State. He’s smart and you could see him going far, but he always comes up short. Not yet though, he wins this battle and moves on.

Cersei Lannister (Purdue) vs. Varys (Auburn)

Classic 5/12 matchup. Cersei is currently the ruler of Westeros but she’s surrounded by enemies. It’s unlikely she’ll survive this season. I don’t have anything against this Auburn team per se but they cost me a lot of money betting against them yesterday so they get to be Cersei.

I don’t have much to say about Varys. Not only does he have no real chance of winning, with the final season focusing more on giant battles and less on the political nuance of various houses, I don’t really see what his role in the plot is going forward. I also don’t have much to say about Auburn, but I’m pretty sure their time in the tournament will end tonight when they play North Carolina tonight. Auburn and Varys are both losers, Cersei advances to the next round.

Arya Stark (Houston) vs. Euron Greyjoy (Virginia Tech)

Arya is easy to root for, she’s been overlooked by the major players as she’s slowly but surely trained to become a master assassin. And now that winter has come she’s ready, and a force to be reckoned with. That’s shy she’s this Houston team.

Euron Greyjoy is a pest. He thinks he has a better chance of winning than he actually does. He’s Virginia Tech. Overconfident and cocky. He, like Virginia Tech will tonight, loses this matchup.

Sansa Stark (Kentucky) vs. Jamie Lannister (Texas Tech)

Sansa Stark is resilient. She’s been through some rough times but now she’s the Lady of Winterfell. She’s home and she’s there to stay. Like John Calipari, who recently said he plans to stay as Kentucky’s head coach until retirement.

Jamie is charming and a great fighter, just like Texas Tech is a great shooting team. You kinda want to root for him for how far he’s come as a character, but you’re not sure you can forgive him for all the awful things he’s done in the past, the same way you’re not ready to root for Texas Tech after they beat Buffalo. Jamie is also a Lannister and they are not long for this Earth. Sansa wins.

And that’s the first round! I ended up writing a lot more than I had planned to, so I’ll introduce the rest of the players and then finish this tournament tomorrow.

Bran Stark (Gonzaga)

Bran Stark is the odds on favorite to rule Westeros. Which is pretty weird, because he has no claim to the throne, no interest in ruling, and he is in a wheelchair (Perhaps the books have insider info?). He’s Gonzaga because he’s easy to root for and he’s had a rough life. He’s never been in battle and Gonzaga has never won a National Championship, but maybe that’s about to change soon.

The Night King (Duke)

Obviously the Night King is Duke, who else would he be? The Night King is the embodiment of pure evil. He’s also likely thousands of years old, and so is Coach K.

Jon Snow (Virginia)

Jon Snow has probably the best claim to the throne. He’s honorable, a good fighter, and spent years defending the wall from what lies beyond. He also died, only to come back to life more determined than ever. Virginia died last year when they became the first ever 1 seed to be upset by a 16 seed. They’re also an easy to root for defensive powerhouse.

Daenerys Targaryen (North Carolina)

Daenerys and her dragons stand the best chance of defeating the White Walkers and the Night King. But she’s not the pure hero that Jon Snow is. She has a little of her father, the Mad King, in her as she prefers to burn her enemies than solve situations with diplomacy. You never want to root for North Carolina, sometimes they just happen to be the lesser of two evils.
